In the story of the Hunger Games, the universal theme of the story has to do with systems. What contributes to this is the fact of survival because Katniss and Peeta worked together to win the Hunger Games. A GATE Icon which connects to the universal theme and its topic is Changes Over Time. The way that Peeta and Katniss worked together shows the system they both had together to win the hunger games. To add further information, the theme topic explains how they both survived. They had strategical ideas to win the games such as when they were going to eat the Nightlock Berries to make the game even so there would be no survivors instead of one but ended up with two survivors, both from the same district. The Gate Icon also adds further info because over time, Peeta and Katniss were getting more together by the end, and as part of Katniss playing along, they both decided to do what they did in order to make the game even. Therefore, this shows why the theme of the story relates to systems.

In the story of the Hunger Games, the main setting or the plot takes place on the arena in the capitol when the games have begun. The plot creates complications for Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark because they were both elected to be the candidates for the 74th annual Hunger Games. There is also another problem; that only one person can be crowned victor, therefore, they have to be determined to win. According to the article on page 148, it expresses that the tributes of the Hunger Games had to gather equipment from the arena in order to survive. In other words, in the plot, the main focus is about surviving with natural resources within the game. Another way this can be expressed is where it says on page 149, "There, resting on a mound of blanket rolls, is a silver sheath of arrows and a bow, already strung, just waiting to be engaged. That's mine, I think. It's meant for me." In other words, the setting affects Katniss by clarifying that there's a bow and arrow and it is a weapon she is useful for. This plot takes place in the rising action. About the scene, it seems like there will be an intense action going on between the tributes of district 12 and the other districts.
The conflict in the Hunger Games is that Katniss and Peeta make a romance which becomes into a key strategy which made them win the games. The conflict started because there was only supposed to be one winner for the Hunger Games, but Peeta and Katniss decided to do a plan where they would eat poisonous berries, therefore there would be no victor instead of just 1. As a result, when they placed the berries over their open mouths, they are both announced tributes of the 74th Hunger Games. Therefore, they are hated by the Capitol for the plan they were about to do. According to page 6, paragraph 3, it states, “I wish I could go back to it because, in retrospect, it seems so secure compared with now, when I am so rich and so famous and so hated by the authorities in the Capitol,” which contributes to the cause on page 9, paragraph 1, saying, “I can’t stop the redness that floods my cheeks. It’s stupid, of course. Hardly anybody knows me better than Hazelle. Knows the bond I share with Gale. I’m sure plenty of people assumed that we’d eventually get married even if I never gave it any thought. But that was before the Games. Before my fellow tribute, Peeta Mellark, announced he was madly in love with me. Our romance became a key strategy for our survival in the arena. Only it wasn’t just a strategy for Peeta. I’m not sure what it was for me. But I know now it was nothing but painful for Gale. My chest tightens as I think about how, on the Victory Tour, Peeta and I will have to present ourselves as lovers again.” Since Peeta and Katniss did a plan for both to win the Hunger Games, conflict between them and the Capitol originated. The character acted kind of forgetting about the love she and Peeta had in the Hunger Games, therefore, that would affect them if the Capitol was to find out.
The main characters in the story “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” are Katniss Everdeen who is a tribute for the Hunger Games, Gale Hawthorne who is Katniss’s best friend and hunting partner, Peeta Mellark who is the other tribute for the Hunger Games, Prim who is Katniss’s sister, Effie Trinket who is an escort for the 74th & 75th Hunger Games, Haymitch who is a mentor, and President Snow who is the president of Panem. These characters are important because they play a big role for the starring character Katniss Everdeen into the Games. The character Katniss Everdeen is hardworking/responsible and caring. She is quite dynamic because when she sees Gale, she becomes happy, therefore Katniss changes throughout the story. According to page 4, paragraph 1, it states, “The sun persists in rising, so I make myself stand. All my joints complain and my left leg has been asleep for so long that it takes several minutes of pacing to bring the feeling back into it. I’ve been in the woods three hours, but as I’ve made no real attempt at hunting, I have nothing to show for it. It doesn’t matter for my mother and little sister, Prim, anymore. They can afford to buy butcher meat in town, although none of us likes it any better than fresh game. But my best friend, Gale Hawthorne, and his family will be depending on today’s haul and I can’t let them down. I start the hour-and-a-half trek it will take to cover our snare line. Back when we were in school, we had time in the afternoons to check the line and hunt and gather still get back to trade in town. But now that Gale has gone to work in the coal mines---and I have nothing to do all day---I’ve taken over the job.” This means that Katniss is being dynamic & showing hard work and showing responsibility by saying that she hasn’t done any attempt of hunting in 3 hours but wouldn’t let Gale’s family down, therefore she will try to do whatever she can. Also, another piece of info which shows that she’s caring is on page 5, paragraph 1, which says, “I think of Gale, who is only really alive in the woods, with its fresh air and sunlight and clean, flowing water. I don’t know how he stands it. Well . . . yes, I do. He stands it because it’s the way to feed his mother and two younger brothers and sister. And here I am with buckets of money, far more than enough to feed both our families now, and he won’t take a single coin. It’s even hard for him to let me bring in meat, although he’d surely have kept my mother and Prim supplied if I’d been killed in the Games. I tell him he’s doing me a favor, that it drives me nuts to sit around all day. Even so, I never drop off the game while he’s at home. Which is easy since he works twelves hours a day.” This means that Katniss tries to give what she doesn’t need towards Gale’s family who doesn’t accept her givings, but still worries or cares about them. To sum it all up, this shows Katniss Everdeen is hardworking/responsible and caring.
